Chapter

Nineteen

King Rodin Damir of Neapolis and Narva and Durnum and Baxway Cascades and Norforte Abyss

It would not have been easy under normal circumstances for Rodin to allow an enemy to leave. It hardly mattered that Britta had come to entreaty with him.

These circumstances were far from normal, though, and Rodin had no issue allowing Britta to leave. That she climbed onto the blinded dragon surprised him, but Rodin merely watched her out of the corner of his eye, his gaze mostly centered on the God of Death.

A chill of delight shivered down Rodin’s spine. One of the Divine had come to see him, had anointed him as champion.

And yet, a part of Rodin was also annoyed. He himself was a god. Well, perhaps only a demigod. He was the son of Uther, but perhaps Vothar did not realize that yet. Or, perhaps even more likely, the god would not speak of who Rodin truly was while the other barbarians were present.

“Return to camp,” Rodin ordered.

Again, he did not look away to see that his command was followed. His ears alone told him that it was.

The God of Death was draped in shadows that moved about his body, almost lie snakes without heads or tails. His face was not completely visible, but from what Rodin could see, he saw bone-white. Had the God of Death no skin at all? Was he merely a skeleton?

“You have done so very much for me,” Vothar said.

“Have I?”

“All of those you have killed… You do intend to kill more for me, do you not?”

“I would have killed that dragon and that weak woman who calls herself queen if you had not sent her away.”

“Bah.” Vothar moved what must have been his hand to dismiss the concern. “She is of no consequence.”

“I will say I have heard that she killed many herself.”

“True. True.” Vothar made a strange sound, and for a moment, the shadows altered, taking on more of a white cloud-like appearance, his lips visible. They twisted into a chilling smile before disappearing once more, the shadows returned. “She was my champion at one time for a reason, and if you had never left Neapolis, I suppose she still will be.”

Rodin nodded slowly. Did each death of a being on Evar feed the power of the God of Death? If that were the truth, than Vothar must be stronger than he had ever been.

No matter. Uther was the All-Powerful God, and Rodin was his son.

Perhaps Uther’s strength came from the other gods, the other Divine. If that was so, then Rodin should continue his quest to dominate over Evar. As Uther’s son, it was his right to be the one to unite all of the kingdoms under one rule. He and he alone could be the only one to accomplish such a task, and already, he was winning.

“You are winning, yes,” Vothar said, “but so far, you have only gained small kingdoms to your domain.”

“My land was already the largest by far,” Rodin said.

“True enough—”

“And Narva was no small bit of land.
